My Mister: A Different Kind of Love

My Rating: 9.5/10 IMDB: 9/10 MyDramaList: 9.2/10

Since I’ve started watching Movie and TV Shows, I haven’t come across anything on the same level as My Mister, also known as My Ahjussi. To be fair, I’ve only watched about 20 Korean/Chinese/Taiwanese dramas to date, but I have a feeling that My Mister is always going to be in my top 5. Why? Because of the fabulous story, the superb acting by every cast member, and its breathtaking music. The only word I can use to describe this beautiful drama is Bittersweet. There is an overall compilation of love, friendship, family, and hardship in this show.

My mister is the story of three middle-aged brothers who are battling their own individual demons that come with disappointments of life and a strong young woman Lee Ji-an (Lee Ji-eun/IU) who has been living a hard life of her own. Park Dong-hoon (Lee Sun-Kyun), the middle brother, an engineer who has a quiet and stoic personality but is the one everyone can count on in a tight spot. Park Dong-hoon is an all-out-underdog that you want to root for every time.

When you envision your life a certain way and it turns out entirely different. Leaving you with disappointment and lack of faith in yourself, others, and your life. How do you deal with it? In a nutshell, that’s the story of the eldest brother Park Sang-hoon (Park Ho-San) and the youngest brother Park Ki-Hoon (Song Sae-Byeok).

One of the most important things this show teaches us is how crucial interpersonal relationship can be in our lives. When I said that this is a different kind of love: I meant it. Almost all the Asian shows center around romance on some level but I’ve never seen any that shows this kind of depth and mutual respect. The relationship between Park Dong-hoon and Lee Ji-an starts when Ji-an starts working as a temp at Dong-hoon’s workplace. One day she witnesses Dong-hoon receiving a bribe meant for someone else which starts a cycle of shared personal information over dinner that Ji-an insists he buy as payment for helping him. If there is a drama that is intended for a mature audience that understand the difficulties of life and overcoming grief through companionship, this would be it.

Now the Music… even though I’m not familiar with Korean music, the music in this drama took my breath away. Small confession: I’ve started listening to Korean music while working or doing homework because it’s so beautiful and melodies. It helps me concentrate on my work by limiting outside noise. If you are a music fan, I would highly recommend One Million Roses by Ko Woo-rim. His voice is just that exceptional.

I’m currently watching Marry My Husband so I’ll be posting a review of that soon as well. If there are any shows you would recommend, I watch, please let me know in the comments below. If you have watched My Mister or plan on watching it, please let me know in the comments below. I’d love to hear from you.
