Watching My First Japanesee Drama – An Incurable Case of Love –

My Rating: 8.0/10 IMDB:7.5/10

Overview

So as mentioned in the title this is my first Japanese Drama that I’ve ever watched. I started watching Korean Dramas a while back and mostly ended up sticking with them because they were more popular.

To me, it seemed like Japanese shows were usually anime and so far, anime hasn’t been my cup of tea. My spouse, on the other hand, LOVES anything Japanese. So when I saw this show pop-up on my netflix suggestion, I had to give it a shot. It seemed like one of those shows that’s right up my alley. It has drama and a cutesy love story, what else could I ask for in a weekend binge watching session?

Based on the same name Manga by Maki Enjōji , An Incurable case of love is about a young high schooler, Nanase Sakura, who during a field trip, comes across a person in need of medical assistance and doesn’t know what to do. Naturally, she calls for help… In walks our Hero…Dr. Kairi Tendo.

These events start a one-sided love from Sakura’s side. She’s so moved by Kairi that she makes it her mission to become a nurse and work with him eventually. A little crazy? Sure. Romantic? Yes!

Having watched Korean Drama for the last few years, I was expecting something similar. In conclusion, I think I was right and wrong about my assessment.

There are many things that are similar about it this drama that aligns with K-Drama such as the emotional rollercoaster the main characters go through. I’ve been told that this is not normal, Japanese dramas are not ‘supposed’ to be this emotional. I guess, I’ll just have to watch a few more to see if I agree.

Likes

1. I loved the main female character, she’s cool and quirky and set in her own ways. She’s uniquely intelligent and goes for what she wants. That’s rare and commendable.

2. I liked the story, I liked the fact that the main characters were able to overcome many things to be with each other.

3. I loved the side characters, they have great side characters with their own unique stories that give a glimpse of love and hope.

4. The show gives you a glimpse of the healthcare workers lives and what they deal with day-to-day.

5. The show was extremely binge worthy. My wife and I couldn’t put it down. We finished it in one weekend.

Dislikes

1. The main male characters and how he treats the female character. He’s pretty darn abusive to Sakura when they first meet. He consistently tries to bully her.

2. The ending was unsatisfactory, I kept hoping for more. It seems like there was a season 2 planned but was never released.

3. Sakura was kind of a doormat character. She was pushed around by multiple people, including the main male character, and was just okay with it. I wish she had a little bit more pride.

Conclusion

Overall, I think the Japanese drama “An Incurable Case of Love” was pretty good. I’m glad I watched it and may end up watching it again in a few months. Like I mentioned in the beginning, I’d give this show an 8/10 because of its story and the main female characters. She’s amazing in her own way. Unfortunately, I wish there was more of an originality to the show and the storyline.

Please let me know in the comments below if you have any dramas you love? Maybe some suggestions for a J-Drama?

  1. Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of JDramas! I haven’t seen this one myself, but I am familiar with the premise due to it’s popularity in the past couple of years. I really liked your review style.

I’m guessing you have Netflix based on your description so some other JDramas that might be up your alley would be: The Makanai, First Love, and Eye Love You. Eye Love You actually has a few Korean actors in there so it might be a nice bridge between K and J Dramas.

Happy watching, and thanks for the review!

Thank you for your comment. If you do end up watching, you’ll have to let me know what you think about it. I’d be very curious.

      Happy Watching! 🙂
